Help Required at Charlton Horethorne Church
In order to keep the inside of the church looking welcoming and cared for, volunteers help with the cleaning and arranging flowers. These activities are carried out on a rota basis and we currently have vacancies in both areas.
Church cleaning involves vacuuming, sweeping, dusting and polishing (excluding the brass).
The cleaning rota is undertaken by teams of two volunteers once a fortnight.
All equipment and materials are provided and if you feel you could spare around an hour and a half approximately four times a year we would be delighted to welcome you to the team.
Church flowers are arranged in two areas of the church fortnightly on a rota basis, either by one person or a team of two. To fit in with the church calendar there are periods of the year, including Lent and Advent, when flowers do not appear in the church and other times, such as Easter and Christmas, when all the arrangers provide flowers to mark the occasion.
Containers and oasis are provided with arrangers bringing their own flowers and foliage.
We would very much like to increase the number of people providing this much appreciated service and you do not have to have previous flower arranging experience – we can always team you up with one of the existing arrangers to give you support.
If you are interested in volunteering for either, or both, of these activities, please contact Jenny Hunt on 01963 220489.
Charlton Horethorne Community Speedwatch – Group Co-ordinator
We are looking for someone to take on this role which is not an arduous task, taking up only a few hours a month.
It mainly involves putting together a rota for the volunteers for the roadside sessions, liaising with Avon and Somerset Police regarding support and, maybe attending quarterly meetings in the South Somerset area.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that you would have to take part in the roadside sessions unless you wished to do so.
If this is something that may appeal to you then please have a chat with Roger Pipe, Peter Brown, Mark Hughes or Dorian Evered (01963) 220910 who have volunteered in the past and would continue if the scheme was running again.
Katie Robinson at Avon and Somerset Police Katie.Robinson@avonandsomerset.police.uk would be the next contact to follow this up.

Village Hall Committee Member Volunteers
Charlton Horethorne Village Hall has been a vital community hub for over 100 years providing facilities for village residents and those in neighbouring villages and hamlets. If you have ever enjoyed an event in the Hall or have hired it for your own family occasions we would love it if you could give up a little of your time to help keep this facility as vibrant as it currently is.
Charlton Horethorne Village Hall is a registered charity and is managed by a Committee of volunteers who are also Trustees of the charity. At present the Committee is four members short of the total of twelve allowed by the charity and this is resulting in the contribution of the existing members being stretched rather thin. The responsibilities of the Trustees include the hiring out of the Hall, its maintenance, health and safety and organising and participating in social and fund-raising events.
Committee meetings currently take place approximately every other month and are held at 6.00 p.m. in the Village Hall for around one and a half hours.
If you feel you could give some of your time to this sociable and important Committee and you would like to find out more, please contact the Chairman, Jonathan Powe, on jonathanpowe56@gmail.com and he will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal – Volunteer Collectors November 2025 I am delighted to tell you that the Somerset Poppy Appeal 2024/2025 has surpassed one million pounds.
The collection currently stands at £ 1,010,353.17. This is a record collection for the county, and the highest total for any county in the Southwest.
May I thank everyone for the contribution that Charlton Horethorne made towards this amazing total.
With this year’s appeal in November rapidly approaching I am asking if anyone would be prepared to join the team in Charlton Horethorne to help us exceed last years total for the parish.
We are looking for people that would be prepared to go door to door in their neighbourhood, be it a whole road or just the few houses around them, so no more than an hour or two of your time.
Also, anyone who could spend an hour or so outside the village shop in the week of the appeal.
If you think you may be able to help, please contact me on 07976 714498
Thank you,
Tony Magson
Poppy Appeal Organiser, Charlton Horethorne
